Wow. This is peak. As a long time Demon Slayer fan and a follower of the series from the beginning, I knew this was going to be outstanding animation, storytelling, music and sound design. The Dolby Atmos was different! Going into it I had no idea what to expect, part of me wondered if this was going to be TRUE Dolby Atmos, but overall I feel extremely impressed by what I watched and heard in the theatre. As an anime lover and a demon slayer fan, let’s dig into my thoughts on this masterpiece!

🎧 Dolby Atmos

The Dolby Atmos was very impressive! I found it to be pretty different from what I am typically accustomed to hearing when I watch Dolby films and I’m unsure if it’s because Demon Slayer is normally a TV show or because this isn’t an American film – So I’ll assume that it was fully mixed in Japan even though we watched the english dub. I think that’s important to note! It felt very different because each sound felt isolated and intentional. It did not feel as mixed as my ears are used to hearing, hopefully I’m explaining that clearly!

I also felt like the majority of the speaking was stereo and panned to the front with some distinction of panning left and right depending on where the speaker was in relation to who the character was talking to in the scene. This was tastefully done. The music during the fight scenes felt like it was circling around us which was cool! The sound effects felt kind of quiet to me, nothing standing out too much, but again, it felt very intentional that it was all crafted this way. I think it was all beautifully done and I respect the decisions of the mixers, but something about the way all of these aspects came together didn’t exactly hit the 5 bag mark for me.

🔊Loudness & Dynamics

Piggybacking to what I wrote earlier, I believe that the dynamics in this film were just OK. If I’m really analyzing the details of this - the speaking parts felt a little too loud and the sound effects such as rain, felt too soft. I wanted these two elements to blend a little better, to feel more like one thing instead of all these different sound aspects at different volumes. The dialogue was always prominent but the supporting score, soundtrack and sound effects were not as consistent in volume as the dialogue.

🎚️LFE

There is great LFE that happens throughout this film! For example, during transitions, fight scenes and when there were heavy things moving on the screen like the towers rising or boulders moving. It felt like a “safe” approach and very selective throughout the entire film.

🎬 Favorite Moments

Petals Falling: Find yourself pleasantly immersed in the forest with petals surrounding you. I loved this so much!

The Infinity Tower: There is amazing panning that follows the infinite twists and turns in the tower.

We’re Surrounded: In the tower we’re surrounded by demons and it sure sounds like it!

Dance of the Centipede: You’ll have to see it for yourself. Amazing Atmos!!!!

Battle the Upper Ranks: For all of these big battles, Atmos is truly bouncing off the walls in these scenes. Some of the best moments of the film, no surprise.

How the Tower Rises: When we have more layers growing upwards, the audio follows and it is really well done.

Becoming a Demon: This arc has VERY immersive scenes like the thunderstorm and fireworks! Amazing!

💡 Final Thoughts

4 Out of 5 Bags 💰💰💰💰

This was an amazing movie for Demon Slayer fans! It totally lives up to the high reviews in every way. They basically gave us an entire season in one 3 hour movie, and I’m thankful for that as a fan. I’m so excited for the upcoming season!

That being said, I thought the Dolby Atmos was really great solid work. I think it was above average with a lot of motion! I felt extremely immersed in the fight scenes and some very emotional moments. I don’t want to spoil anything, you’ll just have to go experience it for yourself. ;) I think I was personally just missing that WOW factor from the Dolby Atmos, but it was impressive work nonetheless. Go see this movie! If you are a fan, the Dolby experience absolutely takes it to the next level.
